Support is available from Hackney Council for people affected by the impacts of Coronavirus, including assistance for renters, small businesses and vulnerable residents.
If you'd like to volunteer your time and skills to help out in Hackney, you can do so via Hackney Council's new Volunteering Hub.
Hackney Counil are also launching a helpline for those affected by Coronavirus, particularly those who are socially isolating and potentially cut off from help. The helpline number is 020 8356 3111 (8am-5pm Monday-Friday).
Residents who wish to make a financial contribution can donate to Hackney Food Bank, which urgently needs donations. You can give money online to avoid unnecessary social contact.
Call Companions is a new service from Re-engage created in response to the COVID19 situation. The idea is very simple: a volunteer call companion calls the same older person between two and four times a month at a mutually agreed time for an informal chat. Calls will last for around 30 minutes.
The programme is aimed at people who are
• 75 or older
• living alone or in sheltered housing with little or no contact with family or friends
• struggle to leave their house in normal times
In addition, the older person will need sufficiently good hearing to take on regular phone conversations.
Older people who are referred to the service will be matched with a volunteer based on their hobbies and interests.
All volunteers all receive training, which includes safeguarding, signposting to other services, and how to engage in difficult conversations. Call companions are supported by call coordinators who monitor the success of the partnership for both the older person and volunteer. If an older person takes part and subsequently decides it is not for them, there is an easy way for them to leave.
If you know someone who would benefit from this service, you can refer them via this online form. Don’t forget to get the older person’s consent first.
