Support in Waltham Forest

A message from Councillor Clare Coghill, Leader of Waltham Forest Network

I’d like to thank residents, community groups, and businesses who have come together to support our most vulnerable residents. This collective effort makes me prouder than ever to be a part of this community
The new Waltham Forest Community Help Network has received hundreds of enquiries to support the most vulnerable members of the community directly, as well as support residents to help each other.
As part of this we have launched a new helpline. It is available for those aged 70 or over who are self-isolating for 12 weeks as instructed by the NHS and do not have easy access to other support. We are working in partnership with Age UK Waltham Forest, Eat or Heat, and PL84U to deliver this service.
Eligible residents will be referred to these partner organisations who can provide support directly by helping deliver essential food supplies, prescription collections, emergency home repairs, and social contact.
We are working in partnership with them to manage increased demand in requests for help, and with supplies and logistics. For those wishing to volunteer I would ask that they use this form to register, rather than call the contact centre so that we can concentrate on helping the vulnerable.
Call Companions: a new service for the elderly

Call Companions is a new service from Re-engage created in response to the COVID19 situation. The idea is very simple: a volunteer call companion calls the same older person between two and four times a month at a mutually agreed time for an informal chat. Calls will last for around 30 minutes.

The programme is aimed at people who are

•             75 or older

•             living alone or in sheltered housing with little or no contact with family or friends

•             struggle to leave their house in normal times

In addition, the older person will need sufficiently good hearing to take on regular phone conversations.

Older people who are referred to the service will be matched with a volunteer based on their hobbies and interests.

All volunteers all receive training, which includes safeguarding, signposting to other services, and how to engage in difficult conversations. Call companions are supported by call coordinators who monitor the success of the partnership for both the older person and volunteer. If an older person takes part and subsequently decides it is not for them, there is an easy way for them to leave.

If you know someone who would benefit from this service, you can refer them via this online form. Don’t forget to get the older person’s consent first.
