Free lung health checks in Islington and Haringey

As you get older it’s important to look after your lung health. If you smoke or used to smoke and you’re aged between 55-74, you can get a free, quick and painless check from the NHS.  

Look out for your invitation in the mail! 

The lung health checks are a simple check to see how well your lungs are working. People who smoke or used to smoke are thought to be at higher risk, because nearly 8 out of 10 cases of lung cancer are caused by smoking. Most people who have a lung health check will not have lung cancer. But for those who do, the lung health check means they can access treatment. Catching lung cancer early, before symptoms start, can improve the chances of a successful treatment. 

How does it work? 

• You will have a phone call with a member of the lung health check team. 
• If they think it’s necessary, you will have a face-to-face appointment with a nurse at a local hospital and you may also have a CT scan. The CT scan only takes a few minutes and does not hurt. 
• The nurse can give you some advice about looking after your lungs. 
• At the lung health check you can get help to stop smoking, but only if you want it. 

Lung health checks and CT scan appointments are currently taking place at University College Hospital and Finchley Memorial Hospital.
