Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association is thrilled that The Scene in Walthamstow was announced overall winner at the National Housing Awards on 10 September 2015. The Association also took away the prize for the Best Regeneration Project.
The Scene is located minutes from Walthamstow tube station. It has helped transform Walthamstow into a residential and entertainment hub by creating stylish apartments, lively restaurants, shops and a cinema.
The scheme has brought a neglected area alive in the evenings and created over 100 new jobs, many of which have gone to local residents.
The judges said ISHA was a clear winner that has formed an interesting place to go. “This well-deserved winner listened to their community and created a place that they really wanted and needed. The unusual design was imaginative and revitalised the site.”
Stephen Stringer Chair of ISHA said “I am delighted to get this recognition for the excellent delivery of our scheme at the Scene and our programme overall”.
Councillor Khevyn Limbajee, Cabinet Member for Housing, London Borough of Waltham Forest said: "I am very proud to see Walthamstow Town Centre's The Scene being awarded Best Regeneration Project in the 2015 National Housing Awards. This development has seen the introduction of 121 new homes into the borough and aligns with the Council’s aim to offer a mix of well-designed new homes in the borough to address our current housing shortage as well as accommodating modest and middle income households who are currently locked out of home ownership.”
Councillor Clare Coghill, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and High Streets, London Borough of Waltham Forest said: "The Scene at Cleveland Place has become a ’go to’ attraction for the local community, with its new cinema, restaurants and improvements to the public space. The development has also created numerous jobs, with many going to local people. It's an honour to be recognised for our efforts in revitalising this space and setting a benchmark for the design standards we want to see within our borough. We are committed to continue to build on the success of developments such as The Scene to ensure Walthamstow Town Centre is a thriving place within our community."
David Orr, Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation said that “Schemes like Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association’s The Scene at Cleveland Place project show that putting the right homes in the right places can be part of something much bigger, sparking new life into communities and bringing in additional investment”.
Jamie Ratcliffe Assistant Director responsible for housing at the GLA tweeted "Congrats Islington&Shoreditch HA, overall #Nhawards2015 winner & punching well above weight building #homesforLondon"
Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association (ISHA) worked in partnership with Waltham Forest Council, Hill Partnerships, PTE Architects, Maclay Murray Spens Solicitors and Hunters Employers Agent to build 73 new one, two, three and four bedroom affordable homes to rent and buy. Included in these are fully adapted homes for disabled residents. There is also plenty of communal space.
