Preventing Condensation

What is condensation?

Condensation is a common problem in homes and is caused when moist warm air meets a cold surface such as glass on a window

When is it a problem?

Usually during winter months when lots of moisture and steam are being produced particularly when cooking or drying clothes.

What can you do about it?

• Cover pans when you’re cooking and use the extractor if you have one

• Hang washing outside to dry if you can

• If you have to use a tumble dryer make sure it's vented to the outside

• If you have to dry washing indoors use the bathroom and keep the door shut and the room well ventilated, ie open the window

• Do not hang wet washing on radiators, this will make condensation worse

• Keep the bathroom door shut and the room well ventilated

Don't let it spread around the house

• Keep your bathroom and kitchen doors shut when bathing, showering or cooking

Keep your home ventilated

• Keep a small window open or a ventilator open in each occupied room

• Open the windows to let the water vapour out, always when you're washing or cooking

• Keep trickle vents open

• Keep extractor fans switched on.

• Keep air bricks uncovered

Keep your home warm

• Heating your home can help to solve a condensation problem if you use the other tips as well

• Put the heating on for longer than an hour in the morning and an hour at night.  You should make sure that the walls as well as the air are warm

• Heat your home at a lower temperature for a longer time.  This will warm the whole building up and keep it warm, so there are no cold surfaces
