Fire safety in flats: Guidance to keep you safe

Pic of a Fire Extinguisher

Living in a flat presents unique fire safety challenges that all residents need to be aware of.

The Home Office has published comprehensive guidelines to help mitigate fire risks in both private residences and common areas of flats.

These guidelines are part of the national Fire Kills campaign and are supported by local fire and rescue services.

Key recommendations include:

  • Ensuring that smoke alarms are functional at all times.
  • Keeping escape routes clear and unobstructed.
  • Managing electrical appliances and cooking practices to prevent fire hazards.

The guidance also highlights the responsibilities of landlords in maintaining fire safety standards and explains how residents can contribute to creating a safer living environment.

For a detailed understanding of all the fire safety measures you can implement, as well as your rights and responsibilities as a tenant, you can read the full guidance Fire Safety in Flats (pdf, 997kb).
