Islington history walk: Royal openings, clown funerals and more

A montage of images from the guided tour of Islington

On Thursday, 26 September ISHA residents and staff joined a free guided tour in Islington.

Braving the rain, we learned about the philanthropic origins of social housing motivated by a desire to see people in good housing, with opportunities to flourish. Work we proudly continue today.

Olga, a resident, said: “I found it very informative, and it was fun for me. I really enjoyed it”.

We started at ISHA’s oldest property located near Chapel Market and opened by Princess Helena Victoria in 1934. ISHA’s early days are full of connections to royalty and nobility, with many helping to fundraise for developments and open new homes.

We passed the home of Joseph Grimaldi, a famous London-based clown at the turn of the 18th century. To this day clowns still have an annual service to commemorate the life of Grimaldi, who many consider the father of clowns.

Passing the King’s Head theatre, based in a pub which has been on that same location since 1543, we moved on to St Mary’s Path where some of our residents have lived their whole lives. Hear from Jean, who’s done just that.

If you would like to attend a re-run of the Islington tour, or a new walk in Hackney, please write to news@isha.co.uk. Both walks will take place in spring 2025, depending on interest.
