Ramadan Mubarak!

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, observed worldwide by Muslims. It involves fasting, prayer, reflection, charity, and community activities. The month is significant as it is believed to be when the Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad by God.

When is Ramadan?

The dates of Ramadan and Eid vary depending on the moon cycle and the sighting of the new crescent moon. This year, Ramadan is expected to start on Sunday 10 March and end around Tuesday, 9 April. Eid al-Fitr is expected to be celebrated on Wednesday 10th April 2024, however the exact date is subject to the sighting of the moon of Shawwal (the 10th month of the Islamic Calendar).

What happens during Ramadan?

Fasting, known as Sawm, is one of the five pillars of Islam, promoting closeness to God, gratitude, self-discipline, and self-improvement. Fasting also fosters empathy for the less fortunate globally. The community aspect is highlighted during iftar (breaking fast meal) at sunset, encouraging shared meals and increased charity work.

Ramadan Mubarak to all our Muslim residents and colleagues
