Hear from a resident – Changes to ISHA’s parking policy

ISHA recently consulted with residents to get your views on the new parking policy. We are pleased to announce that there will be changes to our policy, taking resident contributions into consideration.

Hear from a resident

Jay Jackson took part in the policy consultation. We caught up with Jay afterwards to find out what he had to say.

How did the consultation go?

It went well but I can see there are challenges in place. I would like to see ISHA be more transparent with residents. We don’t always see the work that’s being put in and we don’t know what challenges exist so we can understand why a decision has been made.

What ideas did you discuss?

One of the things we discussed for instance was parking places for carers, and in my opinion disability carers should get a special parking place. If there are some neighbours who need a lot of care, the current system isn’t good. Especially if the spot is tied to a licence plate, it means no one else can make use of the space to assist them. I do hope this is fixed, because it 100% can be.

I think the current system of visiting bays for four-hour blocks can be unfair, especially if people book back-to-back spots. I suggested a shared calendar so if for example I wanted to visit my mum, I can see the calendar and book a week ahead.

What do you think ISHA should learn from this consultation?

I’d like to see more communication ahead of time, especially with things like cameras. ISHA should give residents a reason why it’s going up because it can be intrusive. We should see a step-by-step explanation of why it’s necessary and how ISHA evaluated their decision. I think we should have had this meeting six months ago, since having these conversations earlier would be better, so we can all understand each other's perspectives, and what’s possible.

What kind of support did you have from ISHA?

Beth (ISHA’s Resident Involvement Lead) gave us details and case studies ahead of time and we had a pre-meeting a week in advance, so we all knew what to expect. Everyone planned and read the documents ahead of time, so we were all well prepared and nobody was overwhelmed. I would get involved again as I’m good at thinking holistically. I think whatever the problem is, put yourself in that person's shoes and think how would you feel? You’ll solve a lot of problems thinking like that.
